Toyota Tacoma Tent Rack (1995+) | XTR1 Pre-configured Bed Rack
Couldn't load pickup availability
For every Toyota Tacoma from 1995 to 2026, first through fourth generation, with either bed length. Built in Wichita, Kansas.
Putting a rooftop tent on your Tacoma? The XTR1 is the simplest rack we make for it: an aluminum upright in each corner, two crossbars for the tent to sit on, and open sides in between. It's the lighter of our two pre-configured Tacoma racks, costs $500 less than the XTR3, and is rated to carry a tent with the people sleeping in it once you're parked. Every XTR1 is built to order, to your height requirements, in T-slot profile construction, so tent brackets, MOLLE plates and recovery gear bolt on anywhere without drilling.
Carrying a heavy load off-road, or running a Retrax XR cover or soft topper? The last section of this page lists the Tacoma rack for each of those.
BEFORE YOU ORDER: WHAT'S ON YOUR TACOMA'S BED?
- Nothing, or a soft or roll-up tonneau: order here. The rack comes on our Wide Width bed rail brackets, which hold it 3" above the bed rail, enough to clear most soft and roll-up covers. A tri-fold cover fits but won't fold all the way open.
- Retrax XR cover: order the XTR1 Tacoma rack for Retrax XR, which mounts on the cover's own rails.
- Soft topper (Softopper, Fas-Top or Bestop): get the XTR1 Tacoma Soft Topper rack, with angled uprights that clear the fabric.
- Any other cover with built-in T-slot rails (Roll-N-Lock XT, Pace Edwards UltraGroove and similar): email support@xtrusion-overland.com with the cover model before you order.
Why the XTR1 for a rooftop tent on a Tacoma
- Rated for the tent and the people in it. 1,550 lb static once you're parked, 850 lb dynamic on the road and 450 lb dynamic off-road, evenly distributed. The tents in our Tacoma rooftop tent setup guide weigh about 90 to 165 lb, well inside the off-road rating with room left for traction boards and fuel.
- Open sides. With nothing between the corner uprights, each side of the rack is one long opening. You can load the bed from the side, run a full-length slide-out tray (cut to your 53" or 62" rack), or add an AXS gate that swings a side brace and its MOLLE plates up out of the way.
- A tent mount with nothing hanging down. Our stainless Rooftop Tent Brackets bolt the tent to the crossbars with a short bolt, so nothing pokes below the crossbar where you'd hit your head reaching into the bed. The Standard Kit (4 brackets) is $49.90, the Off-Road Kit (8 brackets) is $98, and iKamper adapter plates are available.
- Lighter and lower priced. Four uprights instead of six means less weight on the bed rails and more of your Tacoma's payload left for the tent and gear.
- Stage packages that cost less. MOLLE plates, AXS gates and slide-outs come sized to your rack, and depending on height, bed and Stage, a package costs roughly $110 to $250 less than the same parts bought one at a time.
When the XTR3 is the better pick: if the tent will share the rack with a fully loaded gear wall on long off-road trips, the six-upright XTR3 Tacoma overland bed rack system is rated higher (500 / 850 / 1,750 lb) and splits the rack into four bays. It costs $500 more and its slide-outs are half length.
Choose your Stage
| Stage | What's added | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rack only | Our most-ordered Tacoma XTR1 setup. Close to half of buyers start with the rack on its own and add accessories later. |
| 2 | 8 MOLLE plates | Gear walls left and right for traction boards, a shovel, an axe and lights, with the tent up top |
| 3a | 8 MOLLE plates, 1 AXS gate, 1 slide-out | One side that lifts for quick reach under the tent, plus a full-length tray for a cooler or recovery kit |
| 3b | 8 MOLLE plates, 2 AXS gates | Our most-ordered Tacoma XTR1 package: both sides lift, so you reach the bed from either side without climbing in under the tent |
| 3c | 8 MOLLE plates, 2 slide-outs | Two full-length trays for heavy gear you'd otherwise drag over the tailgate |
Photos may show accessories that are sold separately unless they're included in your Stage.
15" or 21.5" on a Tacoma
- 15" mid height keeps the tent lower behind the cab, with less wind and an easier reach; the top of the rack sits 3–4" below the back edge of the cab on 3rd- and 4th-gen Tacomas. It uses the smaller 12x9 MOLLE plates.
- 21.5" cab height is the height we recommend: on a 3rd-gen Tacoma it lines up with most roof racks, including our XTR Offroad roof rack for the 2016–2023 Tacoma, and it leaves more room in the bed under the tent for coolers, tall cases and duffels. It uses the larger 16x11 MOLLE plates.
Tacoma owners split evenly between the two heights. Need something else? The XTR1 Custom Height Tacoma rack is made to any height between 10" and 26", in 1" increments.
Where the rack sits against the cab. On both 3rd- and 4th-gen Tacomas the 21.5" rack sits 1½" above the cab roof. The height charts in the photos show each generation.
| Measured from the top of the bed rail | 3rd gen (2016–2023) | 4th gen (2024+) |
|---|---|---|
| Back edge of the cab | 19" | 18" |
| Cab roof | 20" | 20" |
| Highest point (cab or antenna) | 21⅝" | 22½" (antenna) |
| Roof rack height to plan for | 21.5" (XTR Offroad and most others) | 22½" or higher |
| Riser for a tent over the cab (21.5" rack, 1" clearance) | 1½" | 2", more if your roof rack sits above 22½" |
Mounting a rooftop tent that reaches over the cab? Add tent risers so the tent clears the cab, with at least 1" of clearance. On the 21.5" rack that's a 1½" riser on a 3rd-gen Tacoma (the tent sits at 23", also 1½" above an XTR Offroad roof rack) and a 2" riser on a 4th-gen (the tent sits at 23½"). On a 4th gen, plan for third-party roof racks to sit at 22½" or higher; if yours sits higher, use a taller riser so the tent stays at least 1" above it. Our XTR Tent Riser Kit is coming soon. On a 1st- or 2nd-gen Tacoma, measure from the bed rail to the tallest point of your cab, antenna or roof rack and add at least 1". Check your tent's underside and mounting hardware too.
Which rack length fits your Tacoma
Pick your Tacoma's years and bed from the menu; the rack is cut to that length:
| Generation | Bed | Rack length |
|---|---|---|
| 1st gen, 1995–2004 | Double Cab: about 5 ft (61.5" floor) Regular Cab and Xtracab: about 6.2 ft (74.5" floor) |
53" 62" |
| 2nd and 3rd gen, 2005–2023 | 5-ft bed (about 60.5" floor) 6-ft bed (about 73.5" floor) |
53" 62" |
| 4th gen, 2024+ | 5-ft bed 6-ft bed |
53" 62" |
Access Cab Tacomas have the 6-ft bed; 2005-and-newer Double Cabs came with either. If you're not sure, measure the bed floor from the front wall to the closed tailgate.

Load rating
450 lb dynamic off-road, 850 lb dynamic on-road and 1,550 lb static, evenly distributed, or your Tacoma's bed rail rating if that's lower. While you drive, count the tent and everything on the rack against the dynamic rating; once you're parked, the tent plus the people in it count against the static rating. The rack and its load also count against your Tacoma's payload, listed on the sticker in the driver's door jamb.

Toyota Tacoma XTR1 Tent Rack: FAQ
Which rooftop tents fit on the XTR1 on a Tacoma?
Compact tents suit the Tacoma's 53" (5-ft bed) and 62" (6-ft bed) racks best. Our Tacoma rooftop tent setup guide lists the tents we carry for mid-size trucks, from the soft-shell Roofnest Meadowlark (about 90 lb) to the Intrepid Geo 2.5 Pro (about 165 lb). Running a different tent? Email us the model and we'll confirm it fits before you order.
Can two people sleep in a tent on this rack?
Yes. Parked, the XTR1 holds 1,550 lb static, spread evenly, unless your bed rails are rated lower. Count the tent, both sleepers and any gear still on the rack.
XTR1 or XTR3 for a rooftop tent?
For a tent and moderate gear, the XTR1 does the job for $500 less and keeps the sides open for full-length slide-outs. Choose the XTR3 if the tent will ride with a heavy, loaded gear wall off-road: it's rated 500 / 850 / 1,750 lb against the XTR1's 450 / 850 / 1,550 lb. Both come in 15" and 21.5" with the same Stages.
Which height is best for a rooftop tent on a Tacoma?
For most setups, 21.5": it leaves the most room in the bed under the tent, and on a 3rd-gen Tacoma it lines up with most roof racks. 15" keeps a tent that sits behind the cab lower. If the tent reaches over the cab, add tent risers for at least 1" of clearance: 1½" on a 3rd-gen Tacoma (highest point 21⅝") or 2" on a 4th-gen (highest point 22½", at the antenna), more if a 4th-gen roof rack sits higher than that.
How do I get into the bed with a tent on top?
From the side. An AXS gate lifts a side brace and its MOLLE plates on gas struts, so you can reach into the bed without climbing in under the tent. Stage 3a includes one gate and Stage 3b, our most-ordered Tacoma XTR1 package, includes two. A slide-out tray (Stage 3a or 3c) pulls heavy gear out past the tailgate.
Can I use it as a Tacoma ladder rack?
Yes. Ladders, lumber, conduit and kayaks ride on the two crossbars above the bed. Keep the load within 850 lb on the road and secure anything that overhangs the cab or tailgate.
Will it work with my tonneau cover?
Most soft and roll-up covers, yes. The Wide Width brackets lift the rack 3" above the bed rail, and a tri-fold still fits, though it won't fold all the way open. Retrax XR covers and soft toppers get their own XTR1 Tacoma racks (see the box near the top).
Can I start with the rack and add accessories later?
Yes, and close to half of our Tacoma XTR1 buyers do. Every Stage part has its own listing: the XTR AXS Gate Kit (choose XTR1, then 15" for the 15" rack or the 20" option for the 21.5" rack), the XTR Slide Out Kit (choose Full Length and 53" or 62") and MOLLE plates (Small 12x9 for the 15" rack, Large 16x11 for 21.5"). A Stage bought with the rack costs less than the same parts added later.
Can I change the height or upgrade to an XTR3 later?
Yes. The Alternate Height and Conversion Kit for Tacoma swaps in new uprights and crossbars at another height. Its XTR1-to-XTR3 option adds the center uprights and a third crossbar; you reuse your side and top braces by cutting and tapping them to length.
Will it fit a first-gen (1995–2004) Tacoma?
Yes. Pick 1995–2004 and your bed length in the menu. A first-gen Double Cab (about 5-ft bed) gets the 53" rack; a Regular Cab or Xtracab (about 6.2-ft bed) gets the 62" rack.
Does it need drilling?
No. It bolts to your Tacoma's bed rails with the included Wide Width brackets and hardware. Step-by-step guides are on our instructions page.
Is it made in the USA?
Yes. It's designed and built in Wichita, Kansas.
What's the warranty?
Covered by our Lifetime Warranty.
